An IPX8 rating, which is common now, means the phone can be submerged in fresh water without issue. While dust resistance is still the final frontier (that pesky 'X' in the rating), the significant strides in hinge engineering have made the fear of a single piece of grit causing catastrophic failure a thing of the past.

Manufacturers didn't stop there. This UTG is now often paired with improved screen protectors and shock-absorbent layers to better handle drops and impacts. While a direct impact from a sharp object is still going to be a foldable's kryptonite, the overall resilience has increased dramatically. The crease hasn't vanished entirely, but it has become much less noticeable on the latest models, often disappearing from view completely when the screen is on and you're looking at it head-on.

The journey of foldable phones from a niche, fragile concept to a mainstream, durable product category has been incredible to watch. It’s a powerful reminder that innovation doesn't happen overnight. It’s the result of persistent, iterative improvement and a refusal to accept the limitations of today. While they may still require a bit more care than a traditional phone, the durability gap is closing faster than anyone expected. The question is no longer "if" foldable phones are durable enough, but rather, which fold is the right one for you.
