When you think of the Swiss Alps, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For years, my mind would immediately conjure images of snow-covered peaks, the swoosh of skis on fresh powder, and cozy evenings spent by a crackling fire. And don’t get me wrong, that’s a beautiful picture. But a couple of years ago, I discovered a side of the Alps that completely redefined my idea of a mountain getaway. I discovered Crans-Montana in the summer, and honestly, it’s a game-changer.

Imagine a place where you can get panoramic views of the highest peaks in Europe, from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc, all from a sun-drenched plateau. That's Crans-Montana. Perched high above the Rhône Valley in the Valais region, this isn't just a ski resort in its off-season; it's a vibrant, thriving destination that feels like it was made for long, golden summer days. For my fellow Americans looking for that perfect blend of epic European scenery, outdoor adventure, and a touch of sophisticated charm, this is it. It’s a place to breathe deeply, reconnect with nature, and maybe even find a new favorite hobby.

I went there expecting quiet, sleepy villages. What I found was a bustling hub of activity, with world-class hiking, five stunning lakes to swim in, and a culinary scene that could rival any major city. It’s the kind of secret you almost want to keep to yourself, but it’s just too good not to share.

Hiking Through a Postcard

If there’s one thing that will define your summer trip to Crans-Montana, it’s the hiking. The network of trails here is absolutely immense—we're talking over 320 kilometers of marked paths that cater to literally every level of fitness. Whether you're looking for a gentle, contemplative stroll or a heart-pumping ascent to a breathtaking viewpoint, you'll find it here. The landscape is so varied, taking you through fragrant pine forests, across lush alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers, and alongside historic waterways.

One of the most unique hiking experiences involves following the "bisses," which are ancient irrigation channels that have been carved into the mountainsides over centuries. The Bisse du Ro is probably the most famous, and for good reason. It’s a spectacular walk that includes some thrilling sections along suspended walkways attached to the cliff face. It’s not for those with a severe fear of heights, but if you can stomach it, the views are absolutely unforgettable. It’s a walk through history, nature, and incredible Swiss engineering all at once.

For families or those looking for something a bit more whimsical, the Marmot Trail between Cry d'Er and Chetzeron is an absolute delight. It’s a relatively easy walk, and the chance to spot a furry marmot sunning itself on a rock is a huge thrill for kids and adults alike. And that’s the beauty of hiking here; it’s not just about the physical challenge. It’s about these small, magical moments—the sound of cowbells in the distance, the scent of wild herbs underfoot, and the feeling of being completely surrounded by some of the most majestic scenery on the planet.

A Surprising Lakeside Paradise

Now, here’s the part that really surprised me: you can have a legitimate beach day in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Crans-Montana is home to five beautiful, swimmable lakes, each with its own distinct character. On a hot summer afternoon, there is nothing better than taking a dip in the crisp, refreshing water of Lac de la Moubra or Etang Long. It’s a surreal experience, floating on your back and gazing up at the snow-capped peaks in the distance.

The area around Etang Long has been developed into a full-on leisure area, complete with a sandy beach, sun loungers, and even a place to grab a cocktail. It’s a lively, fun atmosphere that feels a world away from the quiet mountain trails. But if you’re looking for something more active, this is also the hub for water sports. You can rent a paddleboard and glide across the calm surface, try your hand at water skiing, or even get a thrill on the wakeboard cableway.

For me, the real magic was found at the quieter spots, like Lac Grenon. It’s a bit more peaceful, perfect for a picnic and a quiet swim away from the crowds. These lakes are the heart of Crans-Montana in the summer. They are where people gather, relax, and play. It’s a side of mountain life I had never experienced before, and it added a whole new dimension to the trip. It proves that you don’t have to choose between a mountain vacation and a lake vacation—in Crans-Montana, you get the best of both worlds.

Golfing on Top of the World

I’m not a huge golfer, but even I was tempted to pick up a club in Crans-Montana. The setting is just that spectacular. The Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club is world-renowned, and for good reason. It hosts the Omega European Masters every September, a major stop on the professional tour. The main 18-hole course, named after the legendary Severiano Ballesteros, is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Imagine teeing off with a panoramic view that stretches across the entire Rhône Valley.

What’s great is that it’s not just for the pros. The club also has a 9-hole course designed by Jack Nicklaus, which is a bit more accessible for the average player but no less stunning. Playing here is about more than just the score. It’s about the experience—the pristine fairways, the perfectly manicured greens, and that incredible, ever-present mountain backdrop. It’s a truly serene and almost meditative way to spend an afternoon.

Even if you don't play, it's worth visiting the club just to walk around and take in the atmosphere, especially when a tournament is on. The energy is incredible. It’s another example of the surprising diversity of experiences Crans-Montana offers. It’s a place that effortlessly blends rugged, natural beauty with moments of refined, world-class leisure.

A Taste of Alpine Culture and Charm

Beyond all the outdoor activities, Crans-Montana is a place with a real soul. The twin towns of Crans and Montana are filled with high-end boutiques, charming cafes, and fantastic restaurants. This is the Valais region, after all, which is known as the culinary heart of the Alps. You can find everything from cozy restaurants serving traditional Swiss fondue and raclette to Michelin-starred establishments offering innovative, modern cuisine.

One of my favorite things to do was simply to wander through the villages in the late afternoon, browsing the shops and finding a terrace to enjoy an "apéro." The local wines are a must-try. The sunny slopes of the Valais produce some incredible vintages, and enjoying a glass of crisp, local white wine while watching the sun set over the mountains is a perfect end to any day.

The summer is also a time for festivals. The streets come alive with music, art, and local celebrations. It’s a wonderful time to experience the local culture and connect with the community. Whether it’s an open-air concert, a food festival, or a traditional market, there’s always something happening. It’s this vibrant cultural life that elevates Crans-Montana from just a beautiful place to a truly engaging and memorable destination. It’s a place that feeds your spirit of adventure and your appetite in equal measure.
